About Prymetall

With an annual production of some 780,000 tons, Prymetall GmbH & Co. KG in Stolberg near Aachen, Germany, is one of Europe’s top 5 manufacturers of copper and copper alloy semi-finished products. In 2002 Prymetall was acquired by Norddeutsche Affinerie AG of Hamburg, the largest copper producer in Europe.

Project Scope

In November 2004 Prymetall tasked software experts Quintiq in the Netherlands, with the implementation of an innovative Advanced Planning & Scheduling system (APS) based on the Quintiq Application Suite that was to make planning processes in the rolling and drawing plant more efficient. The solution is tailored to the production requirements of metalworking operations, which typically input a limited number of raw materials and then smelt, cast, extrude, roll, draw, anneal, plate and slit them to produce a large number of products for a very wide variety of markets. At each process step, the production process can branch in different directions for different end products – a complexity conventional ERP systems cannot handle.

About Luvata

Luvata is a versatile metals group operating worldwide. In its business, Luvata focuses on base metals production, stainless steel, copper products and technology. In its traditional areas of core competence, Luvata is recognized as one of the industry leaders.

Project Scope

Luvata experienced an increase in the complexity of their production process. More orders with a smaller average order quantity makes the utilization of the 25 ton master coils a more complex combinatorial problem. Also, to improve delivery performance, ensuring that the right amount of material is produced becomes increasingly important. Furthermore, whereas historically, the casting shop produced master coils to stock, it was recognized that the whole operation would benefit if all process steps were scheduled using a single optimizer, including the demand planning for the casting shop.
