Hulamin Goes Live with Quintiq Company Planner Solution

Advanced planning and scheduling reduces costs today and supports plant expansion
Quintiq, a leading provider of Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) solutions and Hulamin, an independent semi-fabricator of aluminum products, today announced that they have completed implementation of the Quintiq Company Planner Solution at Hulamin's Pietermaritzburg plant in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.

The implementation at Hulamin (previously called Hulett Aluminium) began in July 2006 and was completed in April 2007. During that time, Quintiq worked closely with Hulamin to create a well matched solution of the Quintiq Company Planner that modeled Hulamin's business rules and reflected their planning concept.

Hulamin produces a range of rolled aluminum products for local and international customers in varied market segments. This variety creates a complex planning environment in which inventory, plant scheduling and deliveries must all be precisely, yet flexibly, planned to maximize plant-wide productivity, minimize order lead times and inventory costs. A current expansion project to add production capacity and improve delivery performance further complicates the planning environment, making plant-wide planning and scheduling even more crucial to Hulamin's business success.

Meeting this challenge, the Quintiq Company Planner Solution provides advanced capacity and workflow planning that ensures a steady flow of metal from Hulamin's hot mills through its downstream processes. By mapping each planning action with planners' decisions and their consequences, the Quintiq solution eliminates bottlenecks, optimizes resource utilization and improves delivery performance. The solution takes into account changes, such as shutdowns and maintenance work, and allows real-time reporting and KPI analysis. In addition, it reduces the time involved in developing and adapting plans and enables planners to answer "what if?" scenario questions.

"The main benefits we are seeing from the Quintiq solution are in the areas of customer service and inventory management" said Lydia Gertenbach, Planning Specialist at Hulamin. "Ensuring we have the right ingot stock at the right time is absolutely vital to our productivity, yet in today's constantly changing market we cannot afford to overstock. With Quintiq we are able to effectively plan requirements across all aspects of our plant operation, and, we are also able to plan future needs. This gives us the insight we need to implement our plant expansion project."

Victor Allis, CEO at Quintiq, added: "Hulamin, our first customer in Africa, is the most recent of numerous implementations we have completed at aluminum companies, many of them involving the Company Planner solution. Our unique technology and in-depth understanding of aluminum processors' needs has made Quintiq the de-facto standard for the aluminum industry. Now, with this proven success in South Africa, we look forward to serving more customers in Africa."
