Successful implementation of the Quintiq Hot Mill Scheduler solution

In spring 2007, AMAG rolling GmbH decided to implement Quintiq's Hot Mill Scheduler planning module with the aim of meeting the global market's growing demands for quality, flexibility, development and new products. A team of Quintiq experts modeled a specific solution to fit the needs of the aluminum manufacturer. The scheduling module helps planners utilize the rolling mills more efficiently; the resulting increase in productivity ensures more flexibility and gives AMAG a stronger competitive edge.

Working together with the Austrian consultants Maul & Partner, Quintiq implemented the solution in less than nine months, completely integrating it with the SAP system - without affecting the production process.

Production planning in the metal industry is among the most demanding planning activities. As metal manufacturers create a multitude of products out of a small number of starting materials, manufacturing plants must be able to control diverse production routes, plan alternative facilities and deal with made-to-stock and made-to-order production. Achieving a faultless material flow across the entire plant requires optimal system support. With Advanced Planning & Scheduling (APS) systems from Quintiq, all product and process characteristics can be modeled to perfection. The Hot Mill Scheduler permits the planning and monitoring of material flows at every process level and provides production workers on the shop floor with detailed information and ideal sequencing of machine orders. With a view to minimizing set-up times, production sequences can be optimized on the basis of each individual resource. The optimal balancing of resources serves to seamlessly integrate each work center into the overall flow.

Deploying the Hot Mill Scheduler solution has led to tangible benefits for AMAG and optimized its production planning from end to end. The system visualizes every process in real time, creating plant-wide transparency. AMAG has been able to reduce its rolling mill set-up times and increase the observance of planned delivery dates.

"It's evident that choosing the Quintiq solution was the right decision. We are seeing a wealth of benefits. It seems that a combination of high-tech expertise, innovation and intelligent processes can achieve much more than just cost reduction. We are also creating value and strengthening our competitiveness," says Anton Zierhut, Operations Manager of AMAG rolling GmbH.

"We think integrated planning solutions have become a must for every manufacturing company. It's the only way they can meet the growing requirements of the marketplace," adds Victor Allis, CEO and co-founder of Quintiq. "We are very happy to have AMAG as a customer and to have them achieve benefits with our solution."
