Green Cargo Selects Quintiq Solution for Operational Planning of Locomotives and Crew
January 26, 2009
Quintiq, a leading provider of Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS)
solutions, today announced that Green Cargo, the Swedish national rail-freight logistics company, has chosen Quintiq to supply it with a multi-resource operational planning and execution management solution
to improve its resource utilization. The solution will integrate the scheduling of Green Cargo's 433 locomotives, 750 shunters and 950 drivers.
Based in Sweden and operating in over 300 locations in Sweden and Norway – and with an increasing international business, Green Cargo is a leading provider of environmentally certified rail and road-based freight transportation and third party logistics services. Until now, Green Cargo had been scheduling its rolling stock and crews in two separate systems. Without a single unified system, Green Cargo lacked the company-wide overview necessary to maximize the utilization of its resources and personnel and to efficiently deal with the frequent, last-minute scheduling changes common to the rail industry.
“To reach our goals for resource utilization, we decided to implement an integrated advanced planning solution which would optimally schedule both our rolling stock and crews in a single application. Quintiq has solutions to all our demands”, says Green Cargo´s CIO Björn Rosell.
Because rail-freight planning is highly complicated due to strict safety requirements and increasing customer demands, Green Cargo needed a powerful scheduling solution which could take into account all the numerous rules and restrictions common to rail planning. These include route knowledge and certification of individual drivers, track access and unit compatibility with the tracks, labor regulations and driver shift preferences. The unique Quintiq architecture, with its fully configurable company-specific layer, has the flexibility to match Green Cargo's specific planning needs, no matter how complex. An endless number of constraints can be entered into the system; Quintiq proprietary algorithms take all of them into consideration when creating schedules. This ensures that safety and labor regulations are constantly upheld and that interoperability issues are automatically resolved.
In addition to scheduling Green Cargo's rolling stock and crews, the Quintiq solution will provide operational event management in real time to help Green Cargo's planners confidently handle daily and last-minute scheduling disturbances. With its extensive conflict and exception handling capabilities, Quintiq aids planners in finding the best solutions to rectify disruptions as they occur.
“Another important criterion in the selection process was the ability of the scheduling software to integrate with Green Cargo's existing and future IT landscape. Again, Quintiq demonstrated superior capabilities”, says Björn Rosell.
The Quintiq solution will support many important business functions by working with Green Cargo's HR system from SAP, workshop system and present tactical planning solutions. In addition, assisting execution in real time, Quintiq will be integrated with the timetable system provided by the national rail infrastructure organization, enabling it to receive timetable updates as they are sent out. “Integration with SAP’s Transportation Management and Event Management will lead to a state-of-the-art transport solution for Green Cargo”, Björn Rosell adds.
Another consideration in Green Cargo's choice of Quintiq was deployment within a short time frame. Quintiq solutions combine the benefits of standard software in terms of speed of implementation and use of best practices with the flexibility of software that is configured to incorporate all of Green Cargo's scheduling rules and constraints to ensure a 100% fit. Ab Ovo and Riiplan, working as a team, will conduct the implementation.
Arjen Heeres, Chief Operations Officer at Quintiq commented: "I am proud to see that Green Cargo has joined other major rail companies in its selection of Quintiq solutions to plan and schedule its rolling stock and crew. Again, we have been chosen because our solutions can best meet the complex planning requirements of the rail industry." About Green Cargo
