Brazilian power distribution company Elektro goes live with Quintiq planning software

September 30, 2010 | 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands

Quintiq, a leading provider of Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) solutions, today announced that Elektro, one of the largest and most innovative power distribution companies in Brazil has gone live with the Quintiq Field Resource APS, chosen for its unique ability to fully support Elektro's current and future planning and business processes. The system provides a single, centralized operational planning solution for the assignment of field services crews, their equipment, vehicles and materials. Phased rollout of the solution, to include GIS based route calculation; optimization and long term planning began in April.

New Business model required new planning approach.

Elektro has built an entirely new field of operation process based on new equipment and machinery. It has a fleet of new vehicles, specialized equipment and 684 electricians, 34 planners, 22 quality assurance technicians, 25 analysts, and 50 assistants additionally trained to handle the installation and maintenance of power distribution networks. With this new model, Elektro will continue to provide a high level of customer service, improve working and safety conditions for its workforce and improve cost/ investment efficiency at the same time.

Optimizing the utilization of these resources and operations presents a complex and dynamic planning puzzle. Any individual project, such as installing poles or running new power lines can involve numerous different tasks, each requiring workers with specialized skills and specific equipment. Precise planning is needed to ensure the right people and equipment are available in the right combinations at the right times, while minimizing downtime and driving time and distance between work sites.

The search for an Intelligent Planning System was driven by the goals: to empower Elektro planners to make better, KPI-driven decisions that support key business goals, such as cost reduction, improved safety and compliance with SLAs; to improve the utilization of all resources; to avoid unnecessary investments in equipment by optimizing short-term and long-term planning; to improve the quality of operational plans while also improving planning efficiency; to enable regional offices to share field resources; and to improve the communication of plans and revisions via mobile devices and Web access.

"Our top priorities are to keep our customers happy and ensure the safety of our employees, but we also need to manage our resources with maximum efficiency," says Santi Copello, Executive Project Manager at Elektro. "Planning is the key to success which means we have very high expectations for the Quintiq solution in terms of improved resource utilization, SLA compliance, safety, and administration efficiency. Based on what we saw in phase 1 of the project, we have an equally high confidence that our expectations will be met."

Arjen Heeres, COO at Quintiq, adds: "The innovative Quintiq approach brings most benefit to companies that have highly complex planning challenges and who are themselves innovators - a description that fits Elektro like a glove. Because of the sheer size of the Brazilian market, companies can gain tremendous economies of scale through advanced planning and scheduling, making Brazil a high-potential market for Quintiq. We are very pleased that Elektro has decided to join Quintiq as one of our customers.
