Leading Swedish rail cargo operator Green Cargo steams ahead with new planning and scheduling solution

October 06, 2010 | 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
Quintiq software was modeled and implemented by rail IT specialist Ab Ovo
ICT solution provider Ab Ovo modeled and implemented an advanced planning solution from Quintiq, integrating the planning and scheduling of 433 locomotives, 750 shunters and 950 drivers. The implementation was completed within just over one year. About 60 users work with the system.

With the new planning system, Green Cargo now has a single, comprehensive solution for planning and scheduling its rolling stock and crew. The solution calculates all salary relevant components and evaluates complex working time regulation rules. It is interfaced with the human resource system, the order system and various infrastructure management systems. "To reach our goals for resource utilization, we implemented an integrated advanced planning solution which optimally schedules both our rolling stock and crew in one single application. Quintiq and Ab Ovo provided us with this solution," says Green Cargo´s CIO Björn Rosell.

One of the key benefits of the solution is the ability to take all rules and restrictions (e.g. route knowledge and certification of individual drivers, track access and unit compatibility, labor regulations and driver salary components) into account. The ability to work with real-time data and scenario planning as well as the full integration of the solution with Green Cargo's IT landscape and the national rail infrastructure organization's timetable system are additional important benefits of the new planning system.

Ali Eskandari, program manager at Green Cargo, says: "Ab Ovo did an excellent job in modeling and implementing the advanced planning solution to our exact needs. Their experience in the rail sector played a significant role in the success of this project."

Quintiq and Ab Ovo share a long history together in the rail industry. After DB Schenker Rail (Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia) and FirstGroup (UK), Green Cargo is already the fifth major European rail operator deploying a rail planning solution delivered by Quintiq and Ab Ovo.
