Sustainability through optimization at AkzoNobel Decorative Paints
December 14, 2012
Optimizing Throughput and Delivery Performance
AkzoNobel Decorative Paints, the world's leading decorative paint company, has selected Quintiq as its partner for Advanced Planning & Scheduling (APS) software. The Quintiq APS solution will be used to schedule the large range of production batches for various decorative paint factories with highly complex production. Quintiq will provide support for the scheduling of the manufacturing mixing processes and the filling and packaging lines of finished cans in each factory.
The aim of AkzoNobel Decorative Paints is to optimize the throughput of paint in its factories and improve its delivery performance. At the same time, AkzoNobel will be using Quintiq’s Scheduler to reduce the inventories in its factories in Stowmarket and Ashington, the Greenfield plant in the United Kingdom, and Pilawa in Poland.
AkzoNobel’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP SAP) will provide the planning team with order processing, whereas Quintiq’s Scheduler will create detailed sequences for each dispersing, mixing and filling operation during the paint production process. With the right operational sequence, AkzoNobel Decorative Paints aims to increase productivity in its factories, reduce lost times and cleaning times, as well as decrease the usage of cleaning liquids in alignment with the company’s environmental sustainability values.
The Quintiq team demonstrated the capabilities of its detailed Scheduler in two ways during the decision-making process. A functional Proof of Concept was presented at AkzoNobel Decorative Paints’ plant in Poland. Both the functional and optimization Proof of Concept were demonstrated to the team in the United Kingdom.
“Both the functional and the optimization Proof of Concepts went very smoothly and as a result convinced us to work with Quintiq for our scheduling processes,” said Peter Lidstone, European Supply Chain Director at AkzoNobel Decorative Paints. “It showed us exactly what we needed — that Quintiq could help us optimize our throughput and delivery performance.”
Past, Present, Future
In 2010, AkzoNobel Powder Coatings chose Quintiq to manage the scheduling of its seven sites around Europe. The seven plants formed parts of a whole supply unit as if operating from a single site, in which each site would carry out a particular type of powder coating production. Today, all seven sites operate with the support of the Quintiq Scheduler, and have the capability of immediately reacting to any changes in market demands.
“Of course, the positive business relationship between AkzoNobel Powder Coatings and Quintiq, as well as the hard work put in by Quintiq for the previous project, influenced our decision,” said Peter Lidstone.
Francois Eijgelshoven, Business Unit Director at Quintiq, added, “After the implementation of the Quintiq Scheduler at AkzoNobel Powder Coatings this year, we are very pleased to add a second Business Unit of AkzoNobel to our customer base. We hope to be of support to more AkzoNobel business units in the near future.”
