Steel manufacturer Outokumpu chooses Quintiq Macro Planner for its European plants

November 02, 2010 | 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands
Quintiq, a leading provider of Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) solutions, today announced that Outokumpu, a global leader in stainless steel manufacturing, has selected the Quintiq Macro Planner solution to support operations planning in its manufacturing facilities and service centers throughout Europe. The solution will be rolled out in four phases, over just 100 implementation days, enabling Outokumpu to take a next significant step towards a world class supply chain with improved Sales &Operation Planning (S&OP) processes.

Planning for better delivery and lower costs
As part of the Outokumpu's Vision to be the Number One in Stainless Outokumpu is looking for ways to improve delivery performance and reduce inventories. In addition, Outokumpu is seeking an advanced solution for sales and operations (S&OP) planning that could encompass all of Outokumpu's European manufacturing facilities and service centers and also take into consideration the numerous different production constraints, business rules and supply chain complexities associated with each facility.

Flexibility, transparency and visibility make Quintiq the winner
The Quintiq team demonstrated the Macro Planner's capabilities by modeling part of Outokumpu's real supply chain, presenting the demo solution within just a few days of receiving the data. The ability of Quintiq to solve any planning challenge and the potential for optimizing Outokumpu's supply chain at the corporate level and local plant levels were key to Outokumpu's selection of the Quintiq Macro Planner. Proven business value that Quintiq has created for other metals companies and the success of an earlier implementation of Quintiq Scheduler at Outokumpu's Italian service center also stood behind the decision.

"We were very impressed with how quickly Quintiq was able to create a demo of our supply chain and with how knowledgeable the Quintiq staff was about the steel industry," commented Eran Hubert, Senior Vice President Supply Chain at Outokumpu. "Our previous experience with Quintiq in our Italian office was positive and we are confident that Quintiq can also support us in strategic planning. The Macro Planner is the first step in creating an integrated business planning process throughout Outokumpu."

The Macro Planner will provide transparency throughout the supply chain and help Outokumpu optimize its product mix, reduce stock levels, and improve delivery performance. The powerful "what-if' decision support provided by the Quintiq solution will enable planners to create different scenarios to explore their impact on the supply chain. With the new planning solution, Outokumpu will be able to more effectively react to changes in materials supply and customer demand and it will gain visibility into the consequences of planners' decisions, improved communication between planning, sales and production, and easier planning.

Francois Eijgelshoven, Director of Metals and Manufacturing at Quintiq commented: "We are pleased that Outokumpu is reconfirming its trust in Quintiq by purchasing our Macro Planner solution. This solution is specifically designed to support the planning needs of large, international manufacturers such as Outokumpu. We look forward to using our extensive knowledge of the metals industry and our expertise in strategic planning to help Outokumpu reach its business goals."
